The Road to the Sharon Cuneta-Gabby Concepcion Reunion Movie (Updated)
by Jek Josue David
A few days ago, at Raymund Isaac's The Good Photographer Book Launch, Sharon Cuneta announced that the leading man for her comeback movie had been chosen already. Nag-meeting na sina Malou Santos of Star Cinema at ang nasabing leading man. Hindi niya pwedeng sabihin. "It has to come from Star," ayon sa kanya. They will start shooting in January and it will be shown in May 2017. (See the video here)
Today, nagulantang ang Sharonians particularly ang fans ng tambalang ito when Malou Santos finally revealed who the leading man will be!
Nagbunyi ang ShaGab fans na sumubok pang mag-ingay sa social media using the hashtag #DontBreakOurHeartsShaGabMovieNa nang parang mauudlot pa ang kanilang pinakaaasam-asam.
In one of Sharon Cuneta's Instagram posts kasi, tila hindi convinced si Malou Santos na maraming nag-aabang ng Sharon-Gabby movie.
Nakapili na sila, she said. Sharon and Richard's movie in Star Cinema was the underrated Minsan, Minahal Kita directed by Olivia Lamasan in 2000 where the two played a couple having an affair outside their own dysfunctional marriages..
The choice has always been Gabby Concepcion kaya tila anti-climactic ang announcement.
25 years ang nagdaan since the last movie of the ex-couple. Let's look at the timeline.
1992: Sharon and Gabby did Tayong Dalawa for Viva Films under the direction of Laurice Guillen. Sharon was with Charlie Cojuangco (or was it Richard Gomez again?) then while Gabby was with Dindi Gallardo.
From the cutesy couple in Dear Heart (1981) to the young married couple in Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin? (1984) to the warring husband and wife in Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin? (1990) to the liberal coupling adults in Tayong Dalawa!
Ito rin ang pinaka-daring na nagawa ni Sharon in terms of characterization na taliwas sa kanyang sweet and mahinhin image onscreen: babaeng liberated na pinatutunayan ang sarili sa mundong pinangungunahan ng mga lalaki.
An excerpt of my review goes:
He touches her hand and slowly kisses her. But she is never the modest type. She kisses him with gusto and an open mouth (which is a rarity in a Sharon Cuneta movie). The minute they go to bed, she takes charge. (Full review here)
Defining the relationship (DTR) scene in Tayong Dalawa which turned 24 on July 1. This is #SharonCuneta and Gabby Concepcion's last movie together. Abangan natin. 1993: Nagpahiwatig si Gabby kay Sharon ng balikan. "You know, why don't we try again?" tanong daw nito kay Sharon (YES! June 2008). There was no official reconciliation but the two started dating (secretly).
In the same interview, Sharon said, "I remember lang doon sa Star Olympics, two weekends 'yon lagi, Parang, this Saturday. he was very sweet to me. The following Saturday, he didn't know me na! Before I knew it, he was married to someone else, si Jenny (Syquia)."
It was the last straw for Sharon. If there were any tinge of hope for reconciliation since they separated in 1987, nawala nang lahat. She was grateful that she was saved from what might be another broken heart from the same man.
She added, "(Give) me naman some credit for not suing anybody because, at that point, we were not annulled yet. It [Gabby-Jenny ceremony] was such a public wedding. So I don't know how many times my face had been slapped already."
In a different interview with YES! a few years ago, Dindi related that she was left hanging that year. After her Miss Universe stint abroad, she eagerly went home to be with Gabby who was the reason why she joined Bb. Pilipinas only to find out na wala na siyang babalikang relasyon.
In 1997 Sharon formally thanked Dindi for being so kind to KC, leaving a good impression on her.
#SharonHistory Nang Iniwan Mo Ako celebrates its 19th year of release today! In this promo clip of the movie fron Master Showman, #SharonCuneta expresses her gratitude towards co-star Dindi Gallardo who was her ex-husband's ex-girlfriend. In a Yes! interview a few years ago, Dindi said that she joined Bb. Pilipinas because Gabby told her to. She eventually won the Bb. Pilipinas Universe and competed for the title abroad. She was excited to go home to Gabby after the contest, knowing he was waiting for her. Only to find out that he married Jenny Syquia. Saklap! Same timeline sila ni Sharon noon who also thought na magbabalikan sila ng ex-husband niya pero nabulaga sa balitang pagpapakasal ni Gabby. Napagkwentuhan kaya nila 'yan sa set? Ang saya siguro, ano? #AllThingsSharon is planning an event for Nang Iniwan Mo Ako's 20th anniversary next year along with other two movies that will be celebrating its 25th and 30th years. Nang Iniwan Mo Ako is definitely one of Sharon's underrated movies that needs to be re-viewed and re-assessed. Abangan! I have a review of the said movie in #DorinaPinedaPage. Hope you can visit the site and read the article.
1994: Gabby got involved in the Manila Film Fest Scam. His name was announced as the Best Actor winner for his movie Loretta instead of Edu Manzano. His leading lady in the said film Ruffa Gutierrez received the Best Actress trophy instead of Aiko Melendez. Lolit Solis, Gabby's manager then, admitted that she orchestrated the entire fiasco. Both Gabby and Ruffa were innocent.
(Loretta was based on the controversial Lorena Bobbitt case. Lorena cut her husband John's genitals while he was asleep because of the domestic violence she experienced from him. John's penis was reattached, and he became a porn actor for a while. 21 years later in 2014, Lorena visited the horrifying experience.)
Manila Film Fest Scam investigation clip
Humiliated, Gabby left the country and pursued a different life in the US, vowing to never return again to the Philippines. He became a successful licensed Real Estate Broker.
Nagkahiwalay rin sila ni Jenny.
Over the years, there were offers left and right for his return to the Philippines but he brushed them aside. He was not interested because he was enjoying a life out of the limelight in California.
Meanwhile, back home, Sharon continued her career: movies, TV, recording, concerts, etc.
1996: Sharon married Kiko Pangilinan. She left Viva to do Madrasta under Star Cinema for which she brought home the grand slam best actress award the following year.
Fast forward to
2007: Rose Flaminiano of FLT Films convinced Gabby to come back to the Philippines. According to her, she had spoken to Malou Santos, and Star Cinema and ABS-CBN were interested in signing him up. But more than that, mas interesado siyang makauwi para makita ang kanyang ama who was not in the best health condition then.
Aside from that, Rose Flaminiano promised Gabby na aasikasuhin niya (and her lawyer husband) ang lahat ng kasong kinakaharap nito sa bansa including the nine cases of falsification of documents na filed ni Jenny laban sa kanya.
The cases filed include those of bigamy. Gabby married Jennifer Martin on June 14, 1984. He then had civil weddings with Sharon on July 23 1984 and on Sept. 10, 1984 and a church wedding on Sept. 23, 1984. He married Jenny Syquia on June 17, 1993 after which Sharon filed an annulment case. His marriage with Sharon was annulled on November 10, 1993.
Mid-2007, while a deal with ABS-CBN and Star Cinema were ongoing, Gabby signed up with GMA Films. He was about to do I.T.A.L.Y. with Jolina Magdangal but it did not push through. "(Ang) dami na biglang hiningi," according to a GMA Films representative (YES! June 2008).
Gabby explained that he backed out of the project because of the script. He didn't like how it became at late na nang ibigay sa kanya. Rose Flaminiano also explained that ABS-CBN had a prior knowledge regarding the GMA Films contract. They were willing to wait for Gabby as soon as he finished the movie.
(To be fair to Gabby, ang chaka naman talaga ng movie!)
Sharon was surprised.
Nobody warned me... Ano lang--konting busina lang sana. Nagulat lang ako kasi I had to find out in public na. 'Okey lang?' No one told me. Everything else naman, may konting [pasabi] sila," Sharon disclosed (YES! June 2008).
Sharon's initial shock eventually faded. Malou Santos started sending her feelers of what might be a reunion movie for both of them. But she dismissed the idea.
"Sabi ko, 'Fifty million? I'll think about it.' And another person said for everybody, 'One hundred million?' 'Maybe, I'll think about it.' But it's not worth it."
She continued, "Ako, wala akong problema to do it, e.
"They caught me at the very low point because ang feeling ko, dear God, it's the first time I'm leaving my family. I was leaving for London in two days. I was having a major case of separation anxiety, and here comes these blow by blow by blow [questions about Gabby]" (YES! June 2008).
Sa birthday concert niyang "Songs of My Heart" noong 2009, bumati si Gabby via video.
Sharon continued doing her show "Sharon" while Gabby did teleseryes. The two shared a movie together when Gabby made a special appearance in the Sharon-Aiai delas Alas starrer BFF: Best Friends Forever. The scene was made to tickle fan's imagination even though they did not appear together in the movie and the scenes were shot separately. Still, it was enough for them. For the meantime.
Sharon did her last movie Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love under Regal Films for the first time, ang rival ng kanyang former studio Viva Films.
Later on KC did the movie I'll Be There with her father under Star Cinema. As part of the promo, she and Gabby guested on her mother's show. For the first time in so many years, the three shared the same stage together. And for the first time since his return, nagharap nang matagal sina Sharon at Gabby.
It was a dream come true for them.
I was not there to witness such rare occasion, but watching it on television, I felt Sharon's awkwardness towards Gabby. I thought, given a choice, baka di siya pumayag sa naturang pagsasama. But she is a mother to KC.
Gabby, however, was in his natural self: playful, naughty, at para wala lang sa kanya ang mga nangyari, calling Sharon and KC his "mag-ina ko."
Perhaps, the awkwardness comes from the fact there was no closure between Sharon and Gabby. Hindi dahil mahal pa niya ito as most people suspect pero dahil sa sakit at hirap na dinanas niya rito after they separated. She kept quiet about it pero kung ano-anong bintang ang pinukol sa kanya ng kampo ni Gabby that time.
"I have never taken such a beating in public as badly as the kind of beating I got from his camp. And it was such a nightmare, that to be faced with all sorts of questions again, not knowing what to expect, and this time hindi na ako mag-isa at hindi na lang si KC" (YES! June 2008).
Natawid naman nang maayos ang show but I hoped na di na maulit pa ang pagkakataong iyon kung malalagay din lang sa incovenience si Sharon.
2011: Sharon left ABS-CBN and transferred to TV5. Balik-Viva din ito ng dalawa since the last film they did was with Viva in 1992 at ang kauna-unahang pelikula ng Viva ay ang P.S. I Love You in 1981 na pinagbibidahahan din nila.
On November 2, 1981 the second film of #SharonCuneta and Gabby Concepcion was released. When Dear Heart became a hit, Sharon's camp requested a follow-up. But its producer Sining Silangan, Inc. refused to do so. Vic del Rosario along Pablo Cuneta then decided to put up Viva Films to produce Sharon's second film. Thus, Viva Films was built because of Sharon. The video features Sharon and Gabby's first and last films in Viva Films. In both scenes, 11 years apart, the couple is seen sailing but in different contexts. PS I Love You on the left (directed by Eddie Garcia, Sharon's father in Dear Heart) signals a beginning of a relationship where Gabby invites Sharon in his private world. Tayong Dalawa on the right (directed by Laurice Guillen in 1992, Sharon's mother in Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin, Sharon and Gabby's comeback film in 1990 after their separation) seals the relationship of the couple after Sharon's character discovered Gabby's character's daughter. It has been 22 years when the two made a movie together, will we ever see a comeback? #AllThingsSharon
2012: Sa kanyang guesting sa Wil Time Bigtime noong January 28, sinabi ni Sharon na hindi na matutuloy ang reunion movie niya with Gabby, "(Kasi) manganganak ang misis niya" (PEP January 30, 2012). Gabby's married to Genevieve "Ginbee" Gonzales.
According to a reliable source, hindi naging maayos ang negotiation between Gabby and Viva Films. Demands were not met. In April 26, 2012 Sharon further expounded, "The problem was, ang nag-uusap, sina Gabby at Boss Vic. Nagkataon lang na at that time, naging sensitive ako. Feeling ko… But it was between the two of them. Sa akin, nothing personal." (Source here)
(Unfortunately, I couldn't get hold of that tweet since burado na sa public timeline ni Sharon.)
Sharon however remained optimistic about it. "I’m very confident na matutuloy ’yon! Maybe next year. Siyempre, when you prepare for a movie, magpapayat ka!"
2013: Gabby transferred to TV5 to do a series. If we finally find the right story, then it would be great if we can shoot it as early as six months from now," (InterAksyon, March 4, 2013).
Meanwhile, Sharon did her very first teleserye in TV5 entitled "Madam Chairman" which coincidentally reunited her with former flame and love team Richard Gomez when he guested on the show.
KC, being close to Cloie, brought Jenny and her sister to meet Sharon in her mom's concert "Once in a Lifetime" with Martin Nievera.
2014: "Madam Chairman" ended. Sharon's "My Pirated Family" with Richard Gomez did not push through.
For a while, her career was put on hold until she announced that she left TV5 and Viva Management. A few months later, she revealed she was returning to ABS-CBN.
2015: Nag-concentrate muna si Sharon sa TV while getting back into shape. Not to mention the emotional punches that come her way every now and then.
Gabby on the other hand did the movie Crazy Beautiful You with Lorna Tolentino under Star Cinema starring Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo where he and Lorna both won best supporting trophies in FAMAS.
2016: Sharon announced that she will return to the big screen. It will be a light family drama at magsisimula na sila ng shooting by August.
It was speculated na si Gabby ang makakatambal niya finally! Timing din dahil magtatapos na ang teleserye nitong "Because of You" sa GMA with Carla Abellana. Subalit bago dumating ang August, Gabby signed another TV contract with GMA. The question was, matutuloy pa ba ang movie with Sharon? Given na TV contract naman ito, how can he shoot a movie with her kung hectic ang taping schedule niya especially na bagong kontrata ito?
Their last movie was Pagdating ng Panahon in 2001.
She also wouldn't mind doing a movie with him since he is her favorite leading man. Pareho sila ng quirks and humor at magkasundo sila sa maraming bagay.
"Whenever I do a movie with Robin, there is never a dull moment." And at this point in her career, gusto lang niyang magtrabaho sa isang masayang set.
Sagot niya, "It will really depend on whether Gabby wants to work with me or if he'll enjoy 'cause we haven't really spend much time together in many, many years. I don't know how much he's changed..."
"Honestly," a tone of apprehension can be heard from Sharon's voice, "I don't even know if we're friends." A nervous laugh followed. "Hindi ko alam ang iniisip niya. I don't know if wants to do the movie with me. If we're going to have a good time while working together kasi ang dami nang nagbago sa buhay namin."
"To make a long story short, I'm too old for complications or drama or whatever..."
(Watch the Q&A here)
In YES! June 2008 she reminisced, "(Noong) ginagawa namin ang Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin?, we were not talking at all! I remember offering to give back my whole suweldo to Boss Vic in the middle of the shooting. It just wasn't worth it!" The whole experience was so traumatic that even director Emmanuel Borlaza refused to work with them again or to even talk about them.
Ang Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin? ang reunion movie nina Sharon at Gabby noong 1990 matapos nilang maghiwalay.
"Direk Maning, I think, almost had another heart attack doing that movie! Kasi ito 'yong script. Ni-rehearse namin. Pag-take, iba na ang dialogue, e" (YES! June 2008).
The line, "Come here and don't be a spoiled brat" was said to be not in the script!
Kapag si Gabby naman ang tatanungin, ready s'ya any time to do the film. "Ang tagal naman ng shooting. I don't know what the delay is..." He even offered na i-produce nila ni Sharon ang movie para matuloy na. "I'll do it for the fans. I'll do it for any reason. I'll do it!"
NOV. 29, 1984 - 32 years ago today, SA HIRAP AT GINHAWA, one of my favorite Sharon-Gabby films was shown. The screenplay was by my friend @direkjoey and directed by Leroy Salvador. The film had its own charm, very sincere and heartfelt that it even won for @reallysharoncuneta a Best Actress award from the Film Academy of the Philippines. FASTFORWARD 2016, @concepciongabby is just raring to make that Sharon-Gabby film a reality! WE WILL CONTINUE TO WAIT & LOOK FORWARD TO THE TEAM UP THAT SPELLED OUR YOUTH. --- Go SHARON-GABBY!!! #anotherimportantfilm #sharongabby
3 days after Sharon posted her wish sa kung sino man ang mapipiling leading man niya: "I just pray for one who doesn't have 'amnesia,' will respect me and not give me any headaches during filming! I am praying for God to pick the right one for this project. After all, it will be my first movie in 6-7 years! Pretty big and special to me. I want to go to work happy everyday, not stressed out and tense."
Star Cinema has assured me that my movie will start shooting in January, and they are presently fixing my schedule with my manager. Tita Malou Santos, our Star Cinema boss however, still is deciding who is to be my leading man between two actors! It's totally her decision. I just pray for one who doesn't have "amnesia," will respect me and not give me any headaches during filming! I am praying for God to pick the right one for this project. After all, it will be my first movie in 6-7 years! Pretty big and special to me. I want to go to work happy everyday, not stressed out and tense.
Si tita Malou (Santos), parati niyang, 'Ill call you.' Ayaw ko namang kulitin." (Source here)
And the long wait is over!
SHARON & GABBY COMING TO YOU IN 2017— Sharon Cuneta (@sharon_cuneta12) December 15, 2016
Dininig na ng Star Cinema ang matagal nang hinihiling ng ShaGab fans including Lea Salonga who teased Gabby to Sharon whenever she had the chance in The Voice Kids!
@sharon_cuneta12 THANK YOU, LORD, FINALLY!!!!!!— Lea Salonga (@MsLeaSalonga) December 15, 2016
#SharonHistory A few days after their wedding, The Best of Sharon & Gabby was released on October 4, 1984 in cinemas. It documented the biggest wedding in Philippine show business! Millions of fans gathered around Manila Cathedral and its nearby areas to witness the wedding of #SharonCuneta and Gabby Concepcion. Such unprecedented crowd at a wedding was never duplicated. Seeing such huge turnout, writer Ed de Leon named Sharon "Megastar." The video is from the beginning of the documentary where Sharon was relating the story of how she and Gabby met. Aside from their interview on their wedding day, the documentary also included clips of the couple's first three films in Viva Films such as P.S. I Love You, My Only Love, and Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin? It was directed by Al Quinn. #AllThingsSharon
"It's certainly one of the most beloved because I don't remember the other, you know, characters, let's say in other love teams na sumikat, na at this age ay gusto pang ibalik, di ba?" (YES! June 2008)
This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie that started #SharonCuneta's phenomenal film career! Today in #SharonHistory, it's #DearHeart35! Bliss Cua Lim: "At fifteen, Sharon had two gold singles to her credit. Her father Pablo Cuneta's stubborn resistance to a film career for his daughter paid off richly: a movie studio eager to make films that would target Sharon's emerging audience of educated middle-class teens offered her 200,000 pesos for her first film... (making her) 'the highest paid neophyte in Philippine history'." #AllThingsSharon
The choice has been made. Mas concern ako/kami sa kanyang well-being. Let's face it, Gabby is a sensitive topic for Sharon. That is what makes it hard for her at times. Here we are clamoring for their reunion movie but we don't know what's at stake for both her and Gabby. Hindi naman sa pagiging negative o pinangunugahan ang maaaring mangyari but if it's possible na magkaroon ng magaan na working environment, posible din na hindi, di ba?
I leave it up to Cathy Garcia-Molina and her team! Gusto namin ng isang magandang magandang pelikula! Hindi pa naman pumapalya si Cathy. Kahit gaano ka-absurd ang plot niya kung minsan, she makes it work. Kundi si Olivia Lamasan, she is the right woman to handle one the bests love team in Philippine show business!
Alwin Ignacio of Abante Tonite, another Sharonian, also wishes, "Dapat kasi sa movie, makita ang growth nila as actors and emotional maturity as a couple who once promised each other a happily ever after."
Ang gusto naman ng film critic at scholar na si Joel David ay matapatan ang Sharon-Aga Muhlach tandem sa Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (2003) in terms of screen chemistry, plot, and overall goodness ng pelikula. Huwag lang maging awkward sa isa't isa, screen chemistry is definitely there. Though dahil nga matagal nang di nagsasama sa pelikula, can they still look good together?
Cheers to Sharon's comeback movie! Maging Madrasta sana ng impact nito sa kanyang karera because she rightfully deserves another great, successful movie! A comeback movie at that!
Be my genie! Grant my wish(es), please? See my list. Click on this.
