#SharonHistory #POTD Showing Today 28 Years Ago

Today in #SharonHistory #POTD Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas turns 28! It was the last film in the so-called Tala Trilogy led by Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala (1984) and followed by Bituing Walang Ningning (1985). It was the first time that Sharon Cuneta, Dina Bonnevie, and Cherie Gil made a film together. Sharon worked with Dina and Cherie separately in different films before this. Hopefully, it won't be last. I'm looking forward to seeing them together in a reunion movie ala The First Wives Club where they can showcase their comedic skills. It was also the first (and last) time that Sharon worked with Dindo Fernando who played her father. Judy Ann Santos's brother Jeffrey was introduced in the film as Sharon's brother. Years later, Sharon did a movie with Judy Ann, and they become the best of friends eversince! Introduced also in the film was Tonton Gutierrez. It was directed by Leroy Salvador.

(If we were to talk about the trilogy, I think that Pasan Ko ang Daigdig [1987] fits better than this one. This film could might as well stand on its own.)

#DearSharon 03 Ang Notebooks Ni Vicky T. Mojica (Part 1 of 2)

Vicky T. Mojica is from San Pedro, Laguna. She currently lives with her Filipino husband in Kuwait. She used to work in Taiwan and Shanghai. A proud Sharonian, she regularly visits this site. She happily tells her story in this two-part letter.

Dear Sharon,

That same year, sometime in August 'ata, nakinood ako sa kapitbahay ng "Germspesyal." Ininterbyu ka ni Kuya Germs. You were crying. I believe na it was tears of joy. Your very words were, "Siya na nga!" At an early age, nakadama ako ng kilig. (I was 11 years old.)

7 or 8 PM na 'ata nag-start ang show. That was the very first time I saw you.

That was the second time I saw you in person.

As a kid, napakamahiyain ko. I have an inferiority complex. Maybe it stems from having a broken family.

I took Mass Communications for this simple reason: makita, makapagpa-autograph, at makapagpa-picture kasama si Sharon Cuneta!

To be continued...

#SharonHistory #DearHeart33 Must Be Love (Or a Love Team) by Ria Limjap (2013)

MUST BE LOVE (OR A LOVE TEAM)
by Ria Limjap

(SPOT.ph) In 1981, the ultimate teen-age dream was Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion in Dear Heart. Directed by the late Danny Ziacita, Dear Heart captures so perfectly the tenderest part of the youthful Sharon-Gabby romance. Direk Danny handpicked Sharon to play April, a super sheltered, pony-riding prissy pusong mamon princess who falls for the good-for-nothing-tisoy charms of Jimmy Lizares played by Gabby. Danny Zialcita reportedly agreed to do the movie only with the 15-year-old Sharon Cuneta. When Sharon was asked whom she wanted to co-star with, she preferred anyone over Gabby Concepcion. Through divine timing or Zialcita’s genius, Gabby Concepcion was cast as her love interest. Thechemistry was palpable between the co-stars and it translated on screen into an adorable puppy love frisson between them. And everyone lapped it up because they were glamorous and exhilarating and fresh. Remember that scene when she goes to Greenhills to shop with her yaya (Suzanne Gonzales) and handcuffs her to a rack so she can make takas and spend the day with Jimmy and they get stuck out of town overnight? April and Jimmy end up sleeping in a bahay kubo, separated by a farmer’s wife. It was funny without an obvious joke.

After re-watching the movie for the nth time, I was filled with nostalgia for a time when people could zing around Baguio back roads in an old Benz, and went to discos and danced slow dances, and a boy called a girl on the phone late at night to ask her out to lunch. Sharon in Dear Heart was so effortless in her role as a precious girl falling in love for the first time. April Mondragon is the quintessential poor little rich girl of Philippine movies, artless and charming, so that even her strict father Don Manolo (Eddie Garcia at his most gorgeous) cannot refuse his niña bonita. By the end of the movie, Sharon and Gabby are cavorting on the beach—probably my favorite tampisaw scene, decorous and sweet—and on the screen instead of the words The End it says "This is only the beginning." We all wanted to believe it.

(Can any other love team measure up to Gabby and Sharon? Will they ever do a comeback movie? Will the magic still be there?)

Last week, I went to see the teen-age dream of 2013, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo in Star Cinema’s Must Be Love. Kathryn plays a motherless tomboy who falls in love with her heartthrob best friend, who promptly falls in love with her pretty cousin. You know how this one goes.

It’s the Ugly Duckling/best friends falling in love plot which the folks over at Star Cinema like to recycle on a regular basis. And while it offers nothing new in terms of story or style, the movie is super boosted with enough generic charm to catch one’s attention, but not enough to keep mine. Perhaps I’m just not the target audience but I can see why the love team of MBL is so popular. Daniel Padilla has a very Robin-esque mojo and I agree with popular sentiment and Boy Abunda—this boy is going to be a big star. Meanwhile, I’ve always found Kathryn Bernardo to be extremely watchable, even in her terrible launching movie Way Back Home, but especially in Jerrold Tarog’s Parola from the Shake, Rattle & Roll franchise, where she plays a witchy teen with a vengeful streak. But in MBL, Kathryn is spunky like a young Maricel Soriano and vulnerably sweet like a teen age Sharon Cuneta. There’s no doubt she could become a major star herself.

Together, Kathryn and Daniel are super cute and it does seem like there’s good chemistry between them. It’s just unfortunate that they were trapped in another trite and predictable rom com stamped with the prevailing taste, badly directed and unfortunately heavily marketed. If only they did something as stylish and properly high gloss as Dear Heart.

But perhaps, along with Danny Zialcita, that era is dead.

Love at first watch: The magic of “Dear Heart” revisited
by Bong Godinez

After Sharon was given a recording contract at the age of 12, singer-composer Rey Valera remembers feeling perplexed when he was commissioned to write a song for the young singer. A straight-ahead love song, according to Valera, didn't seem fit for someone so young.

But Rey wouldn't allow himself either to write anything like a nursery tune. He toiled for a few days. And then, while riding a jeepney he suddenly came up with a song he'd call "Mr. DJ."  Valera instinctively knew that he unearthed a gold mine. "Mr. DJ" did become a major hit and the young Sharon Cuneta became a singing sensation.

Sharon charmed her way into the OPM charts and into the hearts of Filipino listeners. Two years after her breakthrough as a recording artist, she was being eyed by some producers to star in a movie.

ANYBODY BUT GABBY. The theme of Sharon's first film, at only 15, was a no brainer—young love with the usual Romeo-and-Juliet elements, minus Shakespeare's tragic touch.

Contrary to popular notion, Sharon's first movie was not produced by Viva Films but by a production outfit known as Sining Silangan. Director Danny Zialcita was tapped to direct the film; part of his job was also to convince the Cuneta household to allow Sharon to jump into acting.

"I was a singer when this movie was offered to me," said Sharon in an interview with QTV 11's Ang Pinaka...

Almers De Luna, a proud member of the group Sharon's Angels, revealed that the Cunetas asked for a P220,000-talent fee, which at the time was a staggering amount for a newcomer. To the disbelief of Sharon's parents, Sining Silangan agreed to pay the sum without reservation.

"Direk Danny said to my mom, and I will never forget this until the day I die, if the mayor [Sharon's dad, Pablo Cuneta] and you do not allow Sharon to do this I will never make this movie. I will shelve this forever," Sharon fondly recalled. "So it was really me."

Sharon was the only choice for the heroine but the leading man was a  different story. She did not like Gabby.

With a laugh, Sharon confessed, "Anybody but Gabby Concepcion." The reason: "I just think he's a bit suplado... wala, nayayabangan ako."

The original choices, as Sharon recommended to the producers, were Alfie Anido, Jimi Melendez and Albert Martinez—for whom Sharon had a crush at the time. But all three, as fate would have it, were unavailable.

"Eh, siya [Gabby] lang ‘yong puwede," recalled Sharon with a smile, "so okay."

Sharon's disdain for Gabby stemmed from his mestizo good looks, which as Sharon mentioned, made him come across as an arrogant snob.

BIRTH OF A LOVE TEAM. Personal impression aside, Sharon and Gabby's screen tandem proved to be a winning combination at the tills.

The film Dear Heart tells the story of April (Sharon), a well-off, sweet and smart daughter of a strict man named Don Manolo (Eddie Garcia). April's submissive character, particularly towards her dad, was put to a test when she met and eventually fell in love with Jimmy (Gabby).

Dear Heart made a killing in terms of blockbuster revenues. But more than the astronomical figures, the film significantly paved the way for the Sharon-Gabby love team mania that swept the ‘80s.

Director Wenn Derramas summed up the appeal of Dear Heart. "'Yong chemistry nila ni Gabby Concepcion, talagang grabe, kikiligin ka," he told Ang Pinaka..., "'yong mga lines... kuhang-kuha niya pa rin ‘yong masa dahil ‘yong feeling ng isang bagets na, ito ‘yong gusto kong gawin, and yet hindi niya magawa-gawa."

Almers De Luna viewed Dear Heart as the "yardstick of local teen movies." GMA entertainment reporter and PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) contributor Nelson Canlas hailed the film as a genuine "classic."

FALLING IN LOVE. While Sharon had an unfavorable impression of her leading man, the great chemistry shown by the two onscreen was the exact opposite.

"It was strictly work and we only talked when we were in front of the camera," shared Sharon to Remy Umerez of the now defunct Filipino Star Magazine in 1981—the same year that Dear Heart was shown in theaters.

The first few scenes of the film were taken in Baguio and both lead stars had yet to know each another. All of that changed when the shoot moved to Manila.

"April 5 to be exact," recalled Sharon. "We attended this rally at Plaza Miranda and since we could not watch the proceedings of the program because there were so many people, we went to the rooftop and we sat down and talked. We talked about our likes and dislikes, the intrigues in the movies, our zodiac signs and other things that came into our head."

As shooting for Dear Heart went on, the suplado impression Sharon had of her leading man gradually melted.

Sharon animatedly described Gabby at the time, "He has this mannerism of making facial expressions that would make me laugh. I burst into laughter because he tried so hard. But he's so cute. I told him that and he became cuter. He would do this often, lalo na kapag I am lonely. He would do anything to cheer me up."

She even defended Gabby against people who saw him in the negative light  she used to harbor.

"Because they don't know him that well," she argued, singing a different tune. "He gives out an impression that he is aloof at parang ilang. He is also shy. But once he opens up, you'll find out how nice and friendly Gabby is."

The interview was conducted after the film had been shown. When Remy Umerez of Filipino Star probed whether they were still in touch, Sharon replied, "Of course. He calls up the house often and we talk for hours over the phone. He also visits me when he has the time."

The screen romance eventually turned real. On September 23, 1984, Sharon and Gabby tied the knot at the Manila Cathedral, with no less than then- president Ferdinand Marcos as one of the sponsors. Out of the marriage was born daughter Maria Kristina Cassandra Concepcion, now popularly known as KC Concepcion.

Unfortunately, the union did not last.

"LOVE STORY OF OUR TIME." Although the story of Dear Heart was very simple, and at worst, formulaic, the movie struck a chord with the Filipino audience. The innocence of the two main young characters, the clandestine meeting, late night phone calls and the rebellion brought by young love—moviegoers experienced all these in one way or the other during their younger years.

De Luna explained that the movie had enough gloss and mass appeal to cross barriers of the social spectrum.

GMA Films Program Development Manager and Head of Synergy Noel Ferrer hailed Dear Heart as a landmark film: "It was the love story of our time."

Sharon, now 42, openly expresses her qualms over the idea of remaking Dear Heart on TV or on the big screen. Most local film enthusiasts, not just the Sharonians, agree with the Megastar. Director Derramas said that Dear Heart is one those rare movies that seem to be crafted for and portrayed solely by a particular actor; in this case, by Sharon and Gabby.

"Sobrang tailor made sa kanya [Sharon]," said Derramas.   Even Sharon's daughter KC Concepcion would not dare touch the film if ever it's offered to her. "Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion po ‘yong movie na ‘yon," she told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a recent interview. "Sila po talaga ‘yon."

Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion have certainly come a long way since their first movie team-up in 1981. They progressed and did other movies, together and separately, that were more impressive and momentous. But, for all their other projects and personal achievements they reaped as actors, Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion will always be identified with the 1981 teenybopper film that became part of Pinoy pop culture.

"That just might be still the best movie of my career," an emotional Sharon reflected a couple of years later. Referring to her movie career, and perhaps even to her personal life, Sharon pensively added, "I can't believe that's the movie that started it all."

Sharon Cuneta by Emerald Santos

#DearSharon 02 Mananaginip, Mangangarap by Vonnex Cool

Vonnex Cool hails from Iligan City. She is married and has three kids. She works as a nurse. She is grateful to yours truly for putting up a fan page that is dedicated to the person she admires the most.

Dear Sharon,

I grew up watching all your movies and most of your TV shows and guestings.

I really like everything about you: the way you talk, the way you handle your life and the people around you, ang malambing at mahinahon mong pagsasalita.

There were times that I sent you letters through Flash and Kislap magazines.

I was 18 years old then.

Thank you, Ms.Sharon, for inspiring me. Continue being mabait and down to earth.

Love always,
Vonnex Cool

#DearSharon 01 Sharon Cuneta, My Angel by Prima Glass

Prima Glass currently resides in Wisconsin, USA with her Dutch-American husband. They have two kids (Lianna and Chrystina) and two cats. She has been an elementary teacher for 13 years now and currently finishing her MS Literacy. According to her, she has never admired any actor except for Sharon Cuneta. I know that nobody's perfect but she comes close. She possesses not just a beautiful face but a beautiful mind and soul that shine in everything she does.

Dear Sharon,

Life is an exciting journey. It is full of challenges and ways to overcome them. It is a fascinating odyssey where sometimes you find yourself in paradise or in the midst of a turbulent sea. Just when you think that all hopes have vanished, God sends us angels to assure us of His love and reminds us that we are not alone in our journey. In my troubled years, He knew I needed an angel to guide me so He sent me one. He sent me you, ate Sharon!

Let me take you back thirty years ago when I had first encountered you. My family were living in an old abandoned bus station. My father just left for Saudi Arabia after some horrible bouts with numerous pseudo-job employers. We were up to our neck in debts before he was finally able to land a job in the Middle East.

Being the eldest child, I was aware of our struggles. My mother worked as a dishwasher in my aunt's small roadside carinderia to augment my father's meager salary which was not enough to pay our debts. There were days that I couldn't go to school because we didn't have food. The future was looking dark and bleak. I could not see any light at the end of the tunnel. I began to wonder if God loves me.

One day my aunt who owned the carinderia invited me to watch a movie with her at a local theater. At seven years old, I vividly remember the first time I gazed upon your angelic face on the big screen. I fell in love with you instantly! I didn't know why, but you were drawing me close to you. I thought that your beautiful face must come with a beautiful heart, too.

The movie that we saw was Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala where you played Rebecca. Amidst all the trials and tribulations, Rebecca was able to muster all her courage to achieve her dreams for herself and her family. When you started singing "Pangarap na Bituin", tears trickled down my face and hope began filling up my little heart. It was as if you were speaking to me! I knew instantly that you were the angel sent by God, telling me that I, too, can overcome the difficulties I was facing then. Oh, how I wished I could give you a hug and thank you personally for such encouragement!

Throughout the years as I pursue my dreams, you have always been my constant inspiration. You definitely deserved the Megastar title. Above the glitz and glamour of stardom, your admirable character stands out. You are the only famous star I know whose heart is overflowing with love for her fans. You relate to each of them with all sincerity like they are the most important people in your life. You truly have the heart of an angel!

I have realized that angels have their own journeys, too. I have witnessed how you went through some dark ravines in your life coupled with public scrutiny, but you pulled yourself up with poise and grace indomitably. You became not only an angel of love and inspiration to me, but a symbol of courage and inner strength.

I may not be as wealthy as Rebecca. Nonetheless, I still consider myself rich and successful. I have so much to be grateful for. One of them is YOU. I still long to meet you in person and tell you how much I appreciate all the inspiration and encouragement that you have given me throughout my journey. I have faith that the same loving God who sent me my angel will make a way for us to meet someday soon.

I love you forever, Sharon Cuneta!

Love always,

Prima Glass

#GuessTheMovie 16 #POTD Nakagapos na Puso

The answer to #GuessTheMovie 16 #POTD is Nakagapos na Puso. The images that represent the film is ATE: Susan Roces is ate to Rosemarie Sonora, Janice de Belen to Gelli de Belen, Toni Gonzaga to Alex Gonzaga, and Megan Young to Lauren Young in the same way Lorna Tolentino plays an older sister to Sharon Cuneta in the film.

"Oo, ate! Oo, ate!" is Sharon's famous line from the film.

#SharonHistory #POTD Showing Today 30 Years Ago

Today in #SharonHistory #POTD Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala is 30 years old! It was the movie that changed Sharon Cuneta's career film history from Philippine show biz's sweetheart to the Megastar! It was her transition role from being a "poor little rich girl" to a woman with rags to riches story.

John Lapus, a self-confessed Maricel Soriano fan, remembers what it was like watching the movie: "... My God! Sa sahig na kami nakaupo by the time na nakapasok kaming magbabarkada.

(Read more of his story about Sharon Cuneta here: Korek Ka John!)

#Sharon History #POTD Showing Today 22 Years Ago

Today in #SharonHistory #POTD, Tayong Dalawa is 22 years old! It is said to be the movie where Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion patched things up between them and decided to get back together. On the day of a showbiz sports event, they will meet and talk things over. Sharon waited. Only to find out that Gabby married Jenny Syquia in the US a day before their supposed meet up! It was the last straw for her.

Incidentally, it wasn't just Sharon that Gabby left hanging. Dindi Gallardo, after her stint in the Ms Universe pageant, was expecting to be reunited with then-boyfriend Gabby. She, too, was surprised to learn of the wedding.
